A new tour is giving photography buffs the opportunity to see Portugal’s scenic sites through the eyes of Pete Souza, the photographer who took some of the most iconic and defining photographs of Barack Obama’s presidency.
Sagres Vacations is offering a photo tour of Portugal with Pete Souza for people with an interest in photography at all levels. Scheduled for September 2-12, 2019, the tour will visit the Porto, the wine region of the Douro Valley, Lisbon and the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores.
Souza will provide hands-on training, with ample opportunity to capture scenic shots from unique angles and during the Golden Hour.
Souza is a Massachusetts native of Portuguese ancestry who served as the official White House photographer during the presidencies of Ronald Regan and Obama. His career spans 40 years, having published seven books on photography and gained more than 2 million followers on Instagram. His worked helped define the Obama’s presidency – and now he will take guests on an exclusive trip to his ancestral homeland.

The Photo Tour of Portugal with Pete Souza will take visitors from north to south and include meals, deluxe transportation and lodging, and a local, English-speaking tour guide. Periodically throughout the trip, travelers will have hands-on workshop as a group with Souza to discuss the photographs they have taken and collaborate on how to take great photos on upcoming legs of the trip.
Beginning in Porto, a private guide will show you historically significant sites and unique spots for taking in the local culture. From there, the tour will take a trip down the Douro Valley where travelers will explore the vineyards and learn about the region’s legendary Port wine. The tour travels south, stopping at fishing towns and medieval villages to arrive in Lisbon.
Known as the city of good light, it lends itself to beautiful pictures. Rolling hills emerge from the harbor and provide wonderful views of the city and its well-known ceramic rooftops. Historic architecture and World Heritage sites are on the itinerary. The tour culminates in the Azores, where lush green mountains and volcanic craters create grand scenery.
